Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO®) is an evidence-based, inter professional and multidisciplinary training program that equips the entire pregnancy care team with skills to effectively manage obstetric emergencies. This comprehensive course encourages a standardized team-based approach amongst physicians, residents, nurse midwives, registered nurses, and other members of the pregnancy care team to improve patient safety and positively impact maternal outcomes. The course format is a blended classroom which allows learners to work at their own pace to complete the online course portion prior to the live course skills assessment portion.
Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) is a program that was developed by the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). This course helps physicians, certified nurse midwives (CNM), registered nurses, and other health care providers involved in potential emergencies in the perinatal care of mothers.
ALSO aims to decrease morbidity and mortality for both the mother and baby. ALSO does this by incorporating both didactic and practical hands on workstations with lifelike mannequins. Topics include assisted vaginal delivery, Doppler fetal monitoring, fetal dystocias, neonatal resuscitation, management premature labor, management of postpartum hemorrhage, along with forceps and vacuum-assisted delivery.
This course is directed primarily toward maternity care providers including physicians, nurses, and certified nurse midwives
A three-year ALSO Provider status is awarded to those who successfully complete the ALSO Provider Course. Also included are a course completion certificate, wallet card verifying valid ALSO Provider status.
